Deductions Allowed By The IRS

People think of the silliest things to deduct from their taxes. A $5000 mink coat was declared as business expense by one woman. A man built a fallout shelter and attempted to declare it as a "preventive medical expense." A businessman employed an arsonist to torch his store and attempted to deduct the arsonist fee from his taxes. These claims were denied, of course.

What does the IRS consider as deductions? Consulting a Tampa tax attorney is your best bet at having all the deductions you qualify for, but let us take a look at some common IRS deductions that you're allowed to take.

First, let us take a look at common business expenses that are deductible under the IRS laws:

* An office in your home.
* Job search expenses.
* Job-related education.
* Union costs for professional organizations and associations that require membership fees.
* Dry cleaning of police officers, nurses, and security guards' work uniforms.
* Expenses spent in business trips that aren't reimbursed by the company.
* Business tools such as one "adult performer's" breast implants.

There are several deductible work expenses. To ensure you take advantage of right ones, contact a Tampa tax attorney or tax preparer for more information. Some other deductibles that are common:

* Mortgage interest of your primary or second residence's secured loan.
* Sometimes, health insurance premiums are deductible. There are different rules, so ask a Tampa tax attorney. You may be able to deduct your premiums if they account for 7.5% or more of your income.
* Interest on student loans.
* Fuel-efficient vehicles.

There are also some not-so-common deductions that are completely legitimate and can save you money. If you feel you qualify for these or other deductions, make sure you consult with a tax preparer or Tampa tax lawyer. You don't want to claim ridiculous deductions, but neither do you wish to miss out on legitimate deductions.

* Teachers can deduct up to $250 for expenses spent that aren't refunded by the teachers' employers.
* College tuition paid for the year of up to $4000 can be deducted.
* Non-cash charitable donations. These can be things for a fundraiser at school or ingredients to a charity bake sale. These can add up and they can also be deducted.
* Moving expenses for your first job.
* Natural disaster tax deductions.
* Little snacks for your employees. You can claim these little treats off as long as they are not considered compensation for work or salary.

What deductions are you entitled to? If you do your taxes with a tax preparation service online, searching online is particularly convenient. Normally, the service will lead you through deductions to see if you qualify. Consult with a tax lawyer from Tampa or an accountant if you would prefer a bit more guidance.

It's vital to be aware of what you can and cannot clam. The IRS accepted a deduction by a dairy farmer who claimed his African safari. His claim was that it was necessary for work because he was studying about wild animals. The IRS seemed to believe this was completely acceptable. However, be cautious. A male model attempted to write off his entire designer wardrobe on the grounds that he had to look great at all times. While this may be valid, they were not official company clothes (which are deductible). You are not alone if you're not sure. Consult with a Tampa tax lawyer and have all the deductions you need.
